Students – Session 1

Stefanie_Burger Stefanie Burger is a senior level Publicist and small business owner from the Seattle area. She graduated from Central Washington University where she earned high honors and graduated with her undergraduate degree in public relations and pre-law.  At only 24, Stefanie has a wide array of experiences in public relations ranging across multiple sectors including consumer brand PR, non-profit PR, fashion, entertainment and political PR. Stefanie even received the honor of working for President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and former Washington State Governor Chris Gregoire. Stefanie chose to extend her education at Gonzaga in hopes of eventually owning and operating her own international multi-sector public relations consulting firm.  Outside of education and travel, Stefanie’s passions include pageantry, singing (cross your fingers for the next season of “The Voice”), her jewelry company “Legacy Designs,” and watching a rough game of hockey.
Shannon_Cartier Shannon Cartier is a native of Richland, WA now living in Coeur d’Alene, ID.  After receiving a B.S. in Organizational and Mass Communication from Eastern Washington University, she worked in sales and management for Cellular One / AT&T at the dawn of the wireless industry.   She then transitioned into a career as a morning show host and news director for a cluster of Clear Channel radio stations in the Tri-Cities, WA.  After a break following the birth of her two children, she worked as a news anchor/reporter for the NBC and ABC affiliates in the Tri-Cities.  She is pursuing a Master of Arts in Gonzaga’s Communication and Leadership Program and is a graduate assistant to Dr. Shlossberg.  Shannon is a contributing writer to a quarterly lifestyle magazine.
Elizabeth_Collins Elizabeth Collins is from Leonardtown, Maryland. She received her BA in Liberal Studies and Leadership from Frostburg State University. She currently works for Bowhead UIC, a government contractor, as a Project Analyst. After Elizabeth finishes her Communication and Leadership master’s degree, she plans to continue her education in pursuit of a doctorate. Elizabeth’s experience in the Cagli project this summer and the Derry, Ireland program last January have furnished her deep appreciation for travel and culture. In her free time, Elizabeth coaches high school cheerleading and spends time with her wonderful boyfriend, family, friends, and puggle, Harleigh.
Ashley_Fontaine Ashley Fontaine graduated from Webster University with a BA in 2006.  She is currently pursuing a Master’s of Arts degree through Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership program. She plans to use the Cagli experience to positively influence both her personal and professional life.
Tom_Greene Tom Greene. After 10 years working in newspapers, Tom Greene is currently the Communications Coordinator at North Idaho College. He has a bachelor’s degree from Lewis-Clark State College in Communications and is enrolled in the Communications and Organizational Leadership master’s degree program at Gonzaga University.
Andrea_Keikkala Andrea Keikkala was born in Seattle, Washington and raised in Juneau, Alaska.  She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and a Masters in Religious Studies from Gonzaga University.  She will complete the Masters in Organizational Leadership in December of 2013. Andrea is active with the Rotary Club of Kent, on the Board of Directors of the Kent Downtown Partnership, South Sound Chamber of Commerce Legislative Coalition and the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Puget Sound.  In her free time Andrea enjoys golfing, competing in Triathlons, kayaking and hiking.
Jacelyn_Keys Jacelyn Keys works as a Regional Director for Easter Oregon University.  She holds a Master’s Degree in College Student Services Administration and is working on her second degree in Communication and Organizational Leadership.  She enjoys volunteering in her community promoting the performing arts,  literacy, and healthy body images and self-perception among women.   Her life loves include her nephew, her mother, reading, international travel, high-heeled shoes, and baking cupcakes.
Janel_Koval Janel Koval is from Tacoma, WA but moved to Lagos Nigeria with her family when she was 6 years old.  She came back to Washington and completed her undergraduate degree in Liberal Studies with an emphasis on Art and Math.  Janel has been heavily involved in athletics her entire life and coaches club volleyball.  During her time at the University of Washington, she studied photography and enjoys traveling around the world and taking pictures of history.  Janel is currently living in New york where she works as a Marketing Research Consultant.
Jessica_Mico-Wentworth Jessica Mico-Wentworth was born and raised in environmentally friendly Hawaii. She earned a BA in Mass Communication from Mesa State College in Grand Junction, Colorado.  She also completed an internship as Public Information Officer at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.  Following graduation with her BA, she has worked as a wildland firefighter in four other National Parks for the past ten years. Not surprisingly, her interest is in the environment and she would like to work for an environmental organization.  She is in the Masters program for Communication and Leadership Studies through Gonzaga University.
Cathy_Nolte Catherine Nolte currently resides in Liberty Lake, Washington.  A transplant from Wisconsin, she is currently enrolled in Communication and Leadership Master’s program at Gonzaga University.  She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eastern Washington University.  Cathy loves to travel for both work and pleasure.  Having embraced the Cagli experience, she looks forward to bringing her two children to Italy in the near future.
Meagan_Pierluissi Meagan Pierluissi, a native of Mississippi, lives in Spokane, Wash. and attends Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership Studies graduate program on-campus and online.  Meagan received her B.A. in Communications/Public Relations from Mississippi State University in 2004 and has a background in public affairs, media relations, and marketing. Meagan is currently and development coordinator at the YWCA of Spokane. She enjoys discovering new beers in the Northwest area with her husband, Sergio, as well as hiking, backpacking, and hosting Couchsurfers who venture through the Spokane area.
Mark_Ramos Mark Ramos is from Spokane, Washington. He is a proud member of the Coeur D’ Alene Tribe of Idaho, and has three children: Alyssa, Cheldon, and Quannah. He is a graduate of Gonzaga University,  Class of 2007.  He currently teaches Native American culture at the Healing Lodge of Seven Nations. He served in the US Army and the US Coast Guard.
Heather_Schmitt Heather Schmitt. Originally from the Seattle area, Heather currently resides in beautiful Kalispell, Montana.  She is currently working toward her Masters in Communication and Leadership Studies and a certification in International Media and Communication.  Heather received a Bachelor of Arts in English from Gonzaga University in 2004 and works as a high school English teacher as part of the International Baccalaureate Programme.  Upon completion of her Master’s degree, she looks forward to working at the university level or in corporate communication.  Heather’s passions include enjoying the outdoors, running, cooking, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.
Andrew_Smith Andrew Smith. With a degree in Broadcast Communications from BYU, Andrew Smith currently lives in Green Bay, Wisconsin as the sports director for WLUK-TV.  He recently completed his 20th year in the industry and is married to a wonderful wife, with two little girls who he says make the sun shine.  Andrew is in the Communication and Leadership Master’s program at Gonzaga University and is excited to be further broadening his horizons with the Cagli Project.  He has lived in three countries outside of the US (England, Switzerland, and France) and speaks fluent French, along with a new found interest in Italian.
Gina_Tanner Gina Tanner has spent the last twelve months in Israel performing research for her recently completed M.A. thesis – Intercultural Dissonance: An Ethnographic Study of Naqab Bedouin Women. While in Israel, Gina worked as a volunteer at Sidreh/Lakiya Weaving, a non-profit organization in the Negev Desert that seeks to support Palestinian-Arab women in their pursuit to acquire literacy and employment skills. Upon returning to the United States, she hopes to use the knowledge and skills acquired in the Communication and Leadership Program to advance her career in Intercultural Communication Training for the high-tech industry. Gina holds a Bachelor degree in English from Brigham Young University.
Deanna_Tizler Deanna Titzler currently lives in Hyderabad, India, with her husband and two sons.  When not in India, she calls Texas home.  She participates in Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership Studies master’s program online, from which she intends to graduate in May 2014.  She received her BBA in Business/Journalism in 1989 from Baylor University.  Deanna is excited to be a part of the International and Intercultural Communications program in Cagli as she enjoys interacting with her fellow students and the program’s professors and staff in person rather than using a computer.  She hopes to use the intercultural competencies gained through her degree program and the Cagli experience to broaden her career and personal opportunities when she and her family return to the United States in a year.

Evans_Kristen_web
Kristen Evans is from Chicago, Illinois, currently living in Baltimore, Maryland.  She works in consumer and market research with focuses on consumer insights, consumer psychology and behavior, and market trends in the consumer goods industry. Kristen received her B.A. in Sports Management & Communications with a minor in Sociology from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. In 2012, she was accepted into the Masters of Arts Communications & Leadership Studies program at Gonzaga University. Fascinated by cultural identities, Kristen is also enrolled in the Graduate Summer Institute in Intercultural Communication and Certificate in International Media. Outside of work and school, Kristen writes for an online women’s sports magazine as well as an arts and culture blog. 
Geller_Neal_web Neal Geller has an Associates degree in Business with a concentration on Global Business Management.  He pursued his undergraduate degree with a Bachelors of Science in Business with a concentration in Communications.  While working as a professional adult Neal decided to continue his educational journey by working on his graduate program with Gonzaga University for a M.A. in Communications and Organizational Leadership.  Neal believes in supporting those in need by being a part of community events and charitable causes.  He has earned several team awards in his corporate role and has been recognized in the past by the Chamber of commerce as a citizen of the month for honesty and integrity.
Greer_K._web K. Greer is a writer and editor from Atlanta, Georgia. She has worked in the newspaper, magazine, public relations and advertising fields. She is currently a senior writer in the publications department of an international financial services company. She also has a freelance business in which she writes and edits for public and private clients. K. holds a bachelor of arts degree in Print Journalism from Georgia State University. She is working toward her master’s degree in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University.  When she’s not writing or editing, K. is spending time with her three children and her husband of 19 years, Courtland.
Haynes_Hayden_web Hayden Haynes is a native of Minden, La. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science with a pre-law concentration and journalism from Louisiana Tech University in 2011. During which, he completed multiple political internships in both the Louisiana State Capitol and Washington, D.C. He plans on completing his master’s degree from Gonzaga University in communication and leadership studies in May, 2014. He currently is working in corporate communications for a nationwide environmental science and engineering consulting firm. He resides in Monroe, La.
Hernandez_Emily_web Emily Hernandez graduated with a BS in Journalism and Mass Communication from Abilene Christian University in 2008. She currently resides in Denton, Texas with her husband of four years, and an 85 pound yellow lab named Tex. She grew up with nomadic parents and has traveled to many foreign and domestic lands. She has a love of the written word and spends a great deal of her free time reading. Emily also enjoys cooking, traveling, and being active in her church. She aspires to earn a Doctoral Degree so she can teach college one day. She wants to use her intercultural experiences from her time in Cagli to become the kind of professor college students fight to have. Emily hopes to graduate with a Master’s Degree in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University in 2015.
Millar_Elizabeth_web Elizabeth Millar is a native of New Jersey. She currently writes client communications for a pharmaceutical consultant company. She is attending La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA where she is working toward her MA in Communications, Public Relations. She teaches creative writing to different populations, and is also a theater review blogger.

Agneta Murnan is a Public Affairs Officer and Captain in the United States Air Force, and has served principally in Italy, Afghanistan, Montenegro and Oklahoma. She received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the State University of New York, College at Geneseo, with a minor in German and a year abroad at the University of Leipzig, Germany. She continues her studies in German, Italian and Dari, and is pursuing a Master’s of Arts in Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership Studies program.
Perkins_Jamie_web Jamie Perkins is from San Jose, California and graduated from Santa Clara University with a BA in Communication. She has worked in advertising on client side in the Silicon Valley as well as the agency side in Winston-Salem, NC and Los Angeles, CA. Jamie is currently the Sr. Marketing Programs Manager for Sunset Magazine, and has found that even within the United States, different areas of the country provide an opportunity to learn cultural trends and experience different ways of life. In addition to pursuing her Masters degree in Communication and Leadership Studies from Gonzaga University, Jamie is a mother to a three-year-old little girl named Allison. Jamie hopes to set an example for her daughter; one in which allows her to explore global perspectives and embrace cultural differences.
Phelps_Rachel_web Rachel Phelps is an insatiable traveler who enjoys her role as wife, daughter, sister, and friend.  She and her husband, Steve, share a small condo in southeast Portland, Oregon with their unruly terrier, Dixie, who they are constantly trying to convince to mind her manners.  Rachel holds a Bachelor of Science in Music and Education, and is working toward a Masters in Communication and Leadership with Gonzaga University.  When she is not writing about travel, working to fund travels, planning a trip, or reminiscing over photos from past travels, she is found doing responsible things like vacuuming and working as a substitute teacher, or enjoying the beautiful Northwest, cooking, playing music, and convincing friends and family to attend a variety of events.  Rachel enjoys life and attempts to find meaning even in the small things.
Powers_Megan_web Megan Powers has a diverse professional background including writing, Web design & development, marketing, sales, and event planning. Originally from California’s Bay Area, she has called San Diego home since moving there to attend San Diego State University where she earned her BA in English. Currently Megan serves as the Director of Development and Communications for The Vision of Children Foundation (VOC). VOC funds research in an effort to cure hereditary childhood blindness and vision disorders, supports families who have been diagnosed, and provides low vision equipment to schools. She is working towards her Masters in Communication and Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University, which she hopes will continue to improve the communication portion of her career. When not working, you can find Megan traveling the world, watching sports, and volunteering for Delta Gamma, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, and American Cancer Society.
Price_Katie_web Katie Price is originally from Augusta, Georgia but resides in Al Manama, Bahrain with her husband and two dogs.  She holds a B.S. in Deaf Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.  She is currently pursuing her M.A. in Communication and Leadership Studies through Gonzaga University.  Upon completion of her degree, she hopes to work with military members and their families.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading, cooking, and globe trotting.
Salvato_Julie_web Julie Salvato currently resides in Portland, Maine and attends Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership Studies graduate program online.  Julie graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Marketing and a minor in Communication from the University of Maine in 2009.  For the past two and a half years, Julie has worked for a regional wireless carrier in the sales division.  When she is not on the job or networking, Julie enjoys training for upcoming bike races or triathlons.  After graduation in May 2014, Julie plans to continue down the path of sales and consulting.
Starbuck_Sam_web Sam Starbuck resides in Okanogan, Washington.  He is a tutor at Wenatchee College and currently is an actor with LLL talent agency in Spokane.   He holds a BA in Humanities from  Washington State University and is enrolled in the Master’s of Communication and Leadership program at Gonzaga University.  He finds the program in Cagli stretches a persons intercultural understanding and provides firsthand knowledge of living in a medieval community in Italy.

Kaitlin Thornal is a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received Bachelor’s degrees in Journalism and Mass Communication- Public Relations, International Studies and a minor in French. After graduation, she worked in government public affairs as a Department of the Army civilian. She currently lives in northern Italy with her husband and is pursuing a Master’s of Arts in Gonzaga University’s Communication and Leadership Studies program.
